This letter was published in the Journal of the Intensive Care Society (JICS). The public’s response to Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September 2022 was overwhelming, and filled social media for weeks. In response, I thought about how she demonstrated a natural death, and how we could start thinking about death and dying in intensive care medicine. So linking these up, I used Erik Hollnagel’s resilient potentials as a framework to explore how the intensive care medicine community has dealt with death and dying during the COVID19 pandemic, and how we might improve in the future.
